Weight loss (Part 4. Psychological components of weight loss). There are two psychological components of weight loss.
- Motivation
- Self-discipline
1. Motivation is the result from 2 factors.
- The belief: This could stem from the belief that obesity has a negative effect on health. And the belief that losing weight will lead to a better quality of life. However, this motivation must arise from one’s truly beliefs in both ideas.
- The result: The motivation could arise from the desire for result of weight loss. This may be individual desires e.g. one wants to go hiking or one wants to be an actor etc.
2. Self-discipline is developed through parenting and practicing. Those who were grown up with strict family discipline tend to have higher degree of self-discipline compare to those who were raised at will. However, self-discipline is something that can be re-created for all ages, subdivided into 2 dimensions:
- The ability to recall what we thought a few moments ago. Mostly, people who are unaware of their psychological behavior at that certain point of time, so their behavior will be determined by external stimuli which will automatically add to the memories of the past then responds in the form of thinking or actions by the person who "accidentally" do it without intention.
- Self-awareness is when a person knows one’s own mental state of what one is doing. When combine with an ability to immediately recall what one has been doing, this will allow the person to know the stimuli that enter the mind in time, and responds with intention and awareness.
