Primary insomnia
There are two main types of primary insomnia: insomnia and sleep disorder.
1. Insomnia can be further subdivided into
1.1. Temporary insomnia which is caused by stress, depression or anxiety such as a job loss, loss of love.
1.2. Chronic insomnia (over 1 month), which can be divided by at least 7 different causes
1.2.1. Insomnia due to psychological-physiological reasons which includes the following symptoms: excessive anxiety that he would not fall asleep, when intending to fall asleep, it becomes difficult to fall asleep, easy to wake up, and then becomes difficult to fall asleep.
1.2.2. Insomnia due to physical disease such as heart failure or chronic obstructive airway, etc.
1.2.3. Insomnia due to mental illness
1.2.4. Insomnia caused by medicines
1.2.5. Insomnia due to substance addiction
1.2.6. Lack of sleep hygiene (an irregular sleep schedule, poor sleep environment, etc.)
1.2.7. Insomnia with unknown cause
2. Sleep disorders
2.1. Snoring sleep apnea
2.2. Restless legs syndrome which includes symptoms of having unpleasant or uncomfortable sensations in the legs and an irresistible urge to move them
2.3. Circadian rhythm disorder such as jet lag from traveling across multiple time zones, working overtime (work late, early shift, or frequently changing shifts) or illness.
2.4. Narcolepsy is a disorder caused by genetics which often develop since childhood
Solving sleep problems
1. Managing time and schedule to create a steady pattern, such as bedtime, time to eat, so that your body get familiar.
2. Get out of bed immediately when you wake up in the morning.
3. Wake up when you feel you have enough sleep.
4. Avoid sleeping during the day.
5. Make your bedroom comfortable for sleep.
6. Do not use the mattress as a workplace or other activity.
7. Stop doing other activities before going to bed for 30 minutes.
8. Do not eat large meal before bedtime.
9. Avoid drinking coffee after 12:00.
10. Avoid using sleeping pills.
11. Exercise every day and should not exercise after 19.00
If insomnia persists, see your doctor. Before seeing the doctor, you should write down your sleep journal for 2 weeks with information about activities and medications being used during that period as well, so it will be easier to treat and find the cause of your insomnia.
